BBC Inside Out London about gay education in primary and secondary schools

10 March 2009

Controversial film showing how education is integrating gay education to the classroom. It covers same sex parents and gay weddings in reading and drama subjects. Clause 28 was only lifted in 2003 so to include gay issues in the curriculum shows how fast attitudes are having to change in education. However as the film shows this has brought mixed views.

Should schools be bringing this to such young children. Is the classroom the right place for gay education. Schools have a duty under the education and inspections act to prevent bullying and to prevent homophobic bullying some discussion about gay attitudes will be necessary but to what degree. Could it actually cause more resentment or will it make people more considerate and understand? On a positive note it shows how teachers can take on board what it is to be gay in school. Not many schools are brave enough to take on these issues so how will teachers react when it could be made law to deal with these issues.
